Driving in the UK on an overseas licence

A large share of our pupils in Newham, Ilford and Tower Hamlets already know how to drive — they learned in another country, sometimes decades ago. What they need isn't a beginner's course; it's an honest assessment, the UK-specific gaps filled, and a clear run at the two UK tests. That's a different job, and it's one we do a lot.

First: check what your licence already allows

The rules depend on where your licence was issued. Licences from some countries can be exchanged for a UK licence without retesting; most others let you drive in Great Britain for up to 12 months from becoming resident, after which you need to pass the UK theory and practical tests. The definitive, current answer for your country is on gov.uk — search 'driving in Great Britain on a non-GB licence' — and it's worth five minutes before you plan anything.

NoteIf your licence can't simply be exchanged, you'll need a UK provisional licence to book the tests — apply to the DVLA early, as it can take a few weeks to arrive.

What actually trips up experienced drivers

  • Priority rules and roundabouts — the single biggest adjustment for most overseas drivers, especially multi-lane roundabouts with spiral markings.
  • Driving on the left, if you've come from a right-hand-traffic country — it fades fast, but junction turns need deliberate practice.
  • UK test technique: examiners want commentary-level observation — mirror checks that are seen, not just done.
  • Speed-limit discipline in 20mph zones and camera-enforced bus lanes, which many countries simply don't have.
  • Manoeuvres under test conditions — parallel parking and bay parking to UK marking standards.

How we structure a conversion course

Your first lesson is an assessment drive. If you've driven for fifteen years, we're not going to pretend you need forty hours — most experienced overseas drivers need a short, focused block on the points above plus test rehearsal, not a syllabus restart. We'll tell you honestly what we think you need after one hour, and you book only that.

Lessons are one-to-one at £35/hr (from £33/hr in a block), in manual or automatic. If your 12-month window is close to expiring, an intensive format can compress the whole thing — assessment, gap work, theory support and the practical test — into a few weeks.

Common questions

For most non-exchangeable licences it's up to 12 months from becoming resident in Great Britain, but the rule depends on the issuing country — check your situation on gov.uk before relying on any general answer, including this one.
