Chingford practical test centre
Chingford serves the northern end of our patch, which makes it the natural booking for pupils in Walthamstow and across the E4 postcodes. Its routes have two features you do not meet much further south: real gradients, and residential streets that have been deliberately filtered so the obvious line through them is not always a legal one. Hill starts stop being a drill here and become something you simply do, and route planning becomes a skill rather than a formality.
Local route knowledge
What Chingford routes tend to lean on
Hills and hill starts
The ground rises as you head north, so moving off uphill, holding the car on a slope at a junction and controlling your speed on the way back down are all normal parts of driving here rather than exercises. We practise them on the roads the examiner may well use, which takes the drama out of a hill start appearing at a busy junction.
Filtered streets around Walthamstow
Low-traffic cells, bus gates and timed closures mean the shortest route on a map is sometimes closed to you. We teach you to read the signage and plan a legal way through, which is a daily skill for local drivers and a quiet source of penalty notices for everyone else.
The North Circular and the forest edge
Routes can take in fast multi-lane sections on the North Circular and then the open, bend-heavy roads along the edge of the forest, where sightlines are longer but speeds and cyclists both pick up. Reading a road you cannot see all of is the habit this stretch builds.
Examiners choose from a range of routes and the details can change, so treat this as preparation rather than a script — and check the current information on gov.uk before your test.
Chingford pass rate
This is the pass rate for everyone tested at Chingford, published by the DVSA — not our pupils' pass rate, which we don't publish because we have no independently verified figure for it. Treat it as a description of the roads, not a prediction about you.
Urban centres almost always sit below the national average, and that is the honest explanation here: a rural test route has fewer multi-lane roundabouts, fewer bus lanes, fewer cyclists and far less stop-start traffic than anything in this part of London. The examiner's standard is identical everywhere — the difference is how much is happening around you while you meet it. Preparation on these specific roads is what closes that gap, which is the whole reason this page exists.
One thing we won't do is recommend a centre on its statistics. Pupils are booked where they live and where slots are available, and chasing a percentage across London usually costs more in travel and unfamiliar roads than it gains.
The faults that most often cost a test
In DVSA rank order, and national rather than specific to Chingford — the DVSA doesn't publish a fault breakdown per centre. They are worth reading anyway: the top four are all observation and mirror work, which is exactly what gets drilled in lessons.
- 1.Junctions — observation
- 2.Mirrors — change direction
- 3.Move off — safely
- 4.Junctions — turning right
- 5.Response to signs — traffic lights
- 6.Control — steering
- 7.Response to signs — road markings
- 8.Response to signs — traffic signs
- 9.Positioning — normal driving
- 10.Use of speed

How the day runs
- Leave yourself a few spare minutes — your instructor will normally meet you for a short warm-up drive beforehand.
- Taking the test in your instructor's car is fine if that is the car you have learned in.
- The examiner checks your eyesight first, by asking you to read a number plate at 20.5 metres.
- Expect around 40 minutes of driving, including about 20 minutes of independent driving to signs or a sat-nav.
